100-year-old Apo Whang Od is the last traditional Kalinga tattooist in the world

Whang-Od is the last traditional Kalinga tattooist in the world. She lives and works in the Kalinga province of the Philippines. She is covered in ornate designs, tattooed by her father when she was 12 years old. This woman has learned to master her craft by tattooing fearless head hunters over the past, almost, century. Although the headhunting has long since ceased, she continues to tattoo her visitors. She uses a hand tapping technique called “batok.”
She uses a pomelo thorn and bamboo stick. The ink is a charcoal and water mixture. The sound of Wang-od’s hammering of her bamboo mallet on a stick with a razor-sharp thorn dipped in ink on the skin is becoming music to the ears. The pain that people imagine will engulf the body slowly disappeared. Just getting there is an adventure. You have to hike up steep heights and narrow paths. But people from all over the world come to get inked by Whang-Od.
